A thumbs-up, a wave, a peace sign - our hands speak even when we don’t. We may not share the same language, but gestures create a universal understanding.

Hands by Beya Gille Gacha consists of eleven sculptures of - you guessed it - hands, each one speaking in its own way. Every sculpture is covered in thousands of blue beads from Cameroon, her mother’s homeland. Every hand makes a different gesture. At first glance, they seem silent. But step closer, do you understand what they’re saying?

Can you tell me a story without words, by just using your hands?

— Beya Gille Gacha

In this video, Beya Gille Gacha shares how hands became another voice for her. Sometimes, a gesture says more than words ever could. Across borders and languages, hands speak a language of their own.
