A new kind of city square

Plein is a public square, just like any other – with a few extras. It’s covered, has toilets, free Wi-Fi and power outlets. At the kiosk you can read newspapers from around the world and grab a coffee or a snack. Or bring your own food – that’s welcome too.

But Plein is more than a comfortable place to land. It’s also a platform for connection and exchange. On Tuesdays you can join a shared dinner at an affordable price and meet your neighbours. Or practise your Dutch with others who are learning the language.

Fenix shares stories of arrival and departure, of identity and belonging. On Plein, these stories come to life – through programmes shaped by what’s happening in the city.

The city speaks at Plein

Rotterdam has been shaped by migration. On Plein, those histories and experiences take shape in words, images, sounds and flavours – shared from within the city itself.

Plein is the voice of Rotterdam: a space where communities come together, where stories are shared, and where there’s room for both celebration and reflection.

Sometimes quiet, sometimes outspoken. Sometimes lighthearted, sometimes critical. Think of the annual celebration of Chinese New Year, an evening about the cultural meaning of the toko, or the shared start and finish of the Nacht van de Vluchteling (Night of the Refugee).

What happens on Plein often starts from the ground up – in collaboration with Rotterdammers who want to share something, show something, or start a conversation.

Got a plan for Plein?

Plein isn’t a fixed concept – it grows with the city. We invite Rotterdammers to co-create the programme with Fenix, from markets to performances, from conversations to celebrations.

Are you part of an organisation or community and have a plan for Plein? Let us know via plein@fenix.nl – we’d love to hear from you.

Please note: Plein is for everyone. That’s why we don’t host commercial events or private parties.
