On 21 March, it will be 75 years since the first ship carrying Moluccan KNIL soldiers, the Kota Inten, arrived in Rotterdam in 1951. More ships followed, including arrivals in Amsterdam, until 21 June 1951. One of these was the transport ship Roma, which reached the Rotterdam Lloydkade on 8 April 1951.

The Lloydkade is just a stone’s throw from Fenix, where the Pelita Dialogue Table will take place on 8 April. That evening, we reflect on the moment of arrival and on the theme of farewell.

Talking to a stranger and sharing very personal matters with them turned out to be a surprisingly positive experience.

— Dialogue Table Participant

Programme

Alongside the dialogue, a three-course dinner will be served that evening by ShiFra’s dapor. The ingredients and spices add to the story. Between courses, there is time for conversation and performances of music and spoken word, including a tifa performance by Tiga Batang Rumah.

Who it’s for

The Pelita Dialogue Table is for people with a background in the former Dutch East Indies or Indonesia, and for anyone who wants to learn more about how the shared colonial past continues to shape the present.

About Stichting Pelita

Stichting Pelita provides support to war-affected people from the former Dutch East Indies and their families, and promotes a full place in society for everyone with a (family) background in the former Dutch East Indies, while preserving their identity and heritage. Pelita is an organisation that ensures sustainable, appropriate care and wellbeing for both the first and post-war generations of war-affected people from the former Dutch East Indies.

Pelita bases its support and services on the social, cultural, and historical context. This approach allows them to offer tailored support for older people with a background in the former Dutch East Indies.
