The Kaap

Stories are written on the streets of Katendrecht. This is where Europe’s first Chinatown emerged, Surinamese jazz musicians played in nightclubs, and Greek merchants sold goods from their boats. Eastern European migrants, Cape Verdean seafarers, and today’s refugees also left their mark here. Nowhere else in Rotterdam speaks so powerfully of leaving and coming home as Katendrecht.

Discover the stories of Katendrecht under the guidance of a guide from Verhalenhuis Belvédère. The route starts at the Kiosk on Plein, where you are welcomed with a coffee or tea. During the tour, you will be offered a small treat and enter a few locations along the way. The tour ends at Verhalenhuis Belvédère.

About Verhalenhuis Belvédère

Verhalenhuis Belvédère is the first Dutch house for intangible heritage. Located in Katendrecht, Rotterdam, it’s a welcoming space that collects and shares the personal stories of the city’s residents, from Cape Verdean pioneers and Jewish families to Chinese seamen. These stories are shared in many forms: through exhibitions, performances, and walking tours. Always personal, positive, and connecting. The goal of Verhalenhuis Belvédère is to bring people in Rotterdam closer together through storytelling, building bridges between different worlds within the city.
