Whispers from the past

As descendants of families connected in different ways to the Dutch history of slavery and colonialism, the performers share stories that have often remained untold.
With roots in South America, Asia, Europe, and Africa, each woman brings a personal family story to the stage. Through text, music, dance, and movement, multiple perspectives intertwine, inviting the audience not only to watch, but to feel.

We all carry a family history with us. Sometimes silent, often unspoken, yet always present. The performers of What the Wind Tells Us have dug into their own memories and inherited stories. What happened generations ago? And what does that mean today, for identity, connection, and belonging?

As we reflect on Suriname’s independence, these questions resurface. What was its impact then, and what does it mean now? Which stories emerged from it? The performance invites reflection, challenges silence, and encourages dialogue. Srefidensi is a moment to look back on Surinamese roots, and to recognise how these stories echo across all diasporas.
