About the performance

Makandra – Sranantongo for ‘together’ – brings six women into conversation. They share stories that intertwine their lives: a family history rooted in the legacy of slavery, with ties to Curaçao, Suriname and the Netherlands. What do they carry with them? What do they pass on? And what do they choose to leave behind?

The legacy of slavery is baggage we carry with us. Let’s unpack it – and take a closer look, before it becomes too heavy to bear.

About Theaterwerkplaats voor Ouwe Rotten

At Theaterwerkplaats voor Ouwe Rotten, older adults are invited to discover and develop their talents in theatre — through acting, writing, singing and dance. Under the artistic direction of Mariëlle van de Griendt, the group creates performances based on the lived experiences of older people. The stories they tell are relatable, thought-provoking, and often spark conversation long after the final scene.
