Writer and documentary filmmaker Pete Wu discusses his new series, in which he travels with his parents to Wenzhou, their hometown in China, to uncover the untold story of their migration.

In De sleutel van Pete, Pete sets out to understand his parents’ past and what migration has meant for their lives. Along the way, questions surface that have long gone unspoken: how did they experience the culture shock? Where do they feel at home? And how do you talk to your parents about a past that was rarely discussed at home?

About the documentary series
In De sleutel van Pete, Pete travels with his parents, Tony and Lan, to Wenzhou, the city they left around fifty years ago. What begins as a visit to an apartment he inherits becomes a search into their childhood, their departure from China and their life in the Netherlands.
The three-part series is available on NPO 3 and NPO Start from Wednesday 30 September.
