Omar Victor Diop - Diaspora
A journey through identity and history
Diaspora is a photo series inspired by historical paintings. The African men played significant roles in Europe between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. Through these photographs, Omar Victor Diop brings their stories back into the spotlight. At the same time, he links the past to the present by incorporating a football-related object into each image. This highlights the parallel between then and now: these historical figures were celebrated and excluded across Europe, much like African footballers who are both idolised and discriminated against today.

“We are still remembering the future.”
In this video reflects Omar Victor Diop reflects on how African history was once told with closed eyes. Stories were erased or forgotten—but the full picture is finally coming into view.
